My father's problem created my personal problem. Four years ago, the narcotics police entered my humble home, executed a thorough search to find drugs. That was the moment I realized the policemen were looking for my father for drug trafficking. His actions without knowledge place him in jail for a year. It also created threats against my family, which caused me an unknown trip to the United States of America.
My path to the land of opportunity was simply atrocious. There were days that I ate absolutely nothing. Days when I did not sleep at all, and days when I wanted this nightmare to end. In the same way, there were days in which I felt anxious to see my mother and days when happiness was obscured by the thought that I would no longer be with my grandparents.
I remember my first day of travel. It was one of the worsts moments in my life because I had to say GOODBYE to my loved ones. Traveling alone was very difficult for me because I had never done it before. Therefore, thinking about the worst of the trip was one of the many things that floated in my head. Later, when I arrived in Guatemala, the coyotes met me with a group of teens from Honduras; they were good guys and friendly.
After a week of travel. They took us to Mexico City. In my mind, I expected to see the best of Mexico, but they only showed us the worst. Continuously, when the coyote took us to his house. They made us enter into an extremely narrow room where there were literally 30 people. At night one could only sleep in the form of a mummy because there was no space.
As time passed, I began to ask myself why I do this? Could it be I can achieve it? Each of these questions gave me a reason to keep fighting because I wanted to see my mother and my whole family on her behalf. Indeed, my desire to continue grew as how the phoenix rise from the ashes. In the last days of my trip, the most difficult thing was approaching. Crossing el Rio Bravo felt like passing with “A" a class you never attended. But in the end, I was capable to achieve it.
The ironic thing was that before that, the coyote had to take me first, but as there was another boy of my age, they confused us because he looked younger than me (since the orders were to take the Child first). As a consequence, he managed to cross the border without any problem. On the other hand, I had to go through a series of obstacles that caused my immigration detention.
The night they decided to help me cross the border, my heart was beating a thousand times per hour because it was the last step that would define whether I could cross or not. Therefore, I entrusted myself to God because he is the only one capable of providing luck and miracles. As a result, I was able to cross El Río Grande. Nonetheless, after we crossed, a group of US Border Patrol were waiting for us. Everyone was captured by them, but I was the only one left behind. I remember hiding myself under a willow tree when all the people I was with were captured.
After the cops were about to leave, I decided to left the tree to deliver myself to the immigration agents. My decision was unexpected and without thinking. However, I was sure about one thing; I did not wanted to spend the night alone and in the middle of nowhere. Simultaneously, They took me to the cooler, place where a person can not define whether it is day or night. After being in that horrible place, I was transferred to a home, a beautiful place with many innocent lives wishing for freedom. After 20 days of waiting, I received a call from my mother telling me that everything was ready and that she had already bought the plane tickets. You can already imagine the great happiness I felt. That peace of thinking that I would finally be with my mother can not be explained with a thousand words, but with the fact that this journey had finally ended.
Many times, one never imagines what life has prepared for us. One day you get up as if nothing and the other you’re embark on a trip to the land of opportunities where you can appreciate the truth of the "American dream". Maybe you've ever found yourself in a situation that forced you to take an unpleasant trip like mine, but never think that happened to you because life is punishing you. However, think that it is a new opportunity to discover new directions to a better quality of life, and a promising future.
